Timber Road Extension: Better Roads, Smarter Growth

A transformative Mooresville project connecting communities and boosting infrastructure without burdening taxpayers.
June 17, 2025

In a rapidly growing community like Mooresville, infrastructure plays a critical role in supporting future development and improving daily life. One major advancement currently underway is the Timber Road Extension, a transformative project that’s set to reshape east-west mobility, without placing the cost burden on local taxpayers.

What is the Timber Road Extension?

In October 2022, the Town of Mooresville Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a housing development proposal that included an essential infrastructure component: a new connector road from Timber Road to U.S. Highway 21. This strategic extension is designed to ease congestion, enhance connectivity, and support Mooresville’s growing population.

By creating a more efficient east-west traffic route, the project addresses long-standing transportation challenges and opens the door for continued responsible development across the region.

Timeline and Construction Progress

The construction phase officially kicked off in December 2024, with clearing operations getting underway as heavy equipment arrived onsite. A ceremonial groundbreaking event followed in February 2025, signaling the town’s commitment to progress and transparency in public works.

As of June 2025, the project is well into the active construction stage. Here’s a quick breakdown of the current timeline:

Estimated Completion📅 End of 2025

Features & Benefits of the Project

This is not just any road construction. The Timber Road Extension will deliver meaningful enhancements to Mooresville’s infrastructure, including:

  • New turn lanes on U.S. 21 and N.C. 115 to improve traffic flow

  • Railroad crossing improvements, ensuring safer and more reliable routes

  • Potential closure or rerouting of smaller crossings like Patterson Avenue to increase safety

  • Increased east-west access that will reduce congestion and improve commutes

One of the most impactful elements of the project? It is fully funded by a state grant and the private developer, meaning no additional cost to Mooresville taxpayers.

Investment and Oversight

The total estimated cost for the Timber Road Extension is $18 million, backed by a collaboration between state-level infrastructure funding and private investment from the developer.

Project oversight is being managed by the Town of Mooresville’s Engineering and Transportation Departments. The designated project consultant, David Coble, is working closely with town officials to ensure timelines are met and quality standards are maintained.

What This Means for Mooresville

The Timber Road Extension isn’t just a new road, it’s a sign of thoughtful planning, smart growth, and proactive community investment. With development booming across the Mooresville area, this kind of infrastructure ensures that new housing projects don’t outpace transportation access.

Once completed, the road will significantly enhance daily commutes, connect neighborhoods more efficiently, and support local businesses by improving logistics and traffic movement.
